Technology and communication

Intranet, internet and extranet — what’s it all about? Where’s it going and will it ever end?

What’s it all about?

What you are reading now is on our internet site. It’s on the World Wide Web; hence the www dot bit. It’s accessible by anyone who wants to find out about Pennine or to keep in touch.

We also have intranet, our internal site on Pennine’s private computer network, which is accessible only from computers on the Pennine. It contains photos and information useful for Pennine Co-workers.

We are considering having an extranet site for parents and students. You would have to register and enter your password to gain access to the site.

Where’s it going?

It’s all about keeping in touch and sharing. It will never replace our hands-on approach, but it will support many of our activities.

We are continually updating our computer network to enable better communication, recording and sharing information.

Will it ever end?

Well, there are power cuts, rogue meteorites and other hazards, but we hope we can continue to integrate an exciting use of technology into our activities at Pennine.
