Pennine Extranet
Intranet, internet and now extranet — What's it all about? Where's it going and will it ever end?
What's it all about?
If you are here reading this then you are on our internet. It's the www dot bit. It's for people wanting to find out about Pennine and keep in touch. Our intranet is only accessible from computers on the Pennine network by typing — you guessed it — Pennine in a web browser without the www bit. It has many photos and I hope will eventually have more students’ work. We have two extranets. One a site for all the co-workers http://coworker.pennine.org.uk who have ever worked here in over nearly 30 years since Pennine started. The other is for parents and students - it's a sort of who's who in Pennine http://people.pennine.org.uk Unfortunately we need to give you a password to access this site as it has contact details.. Please follow the link if you would like to find out more.
Where's it going?
Who knows? I guess it's all about keeping in touch and sharing. It will never replace our hands-on approach, but I am sure it will support many of our activities. We have just introduced thin client computers into locations where damage could easily occur to more complex computers. They are about the size of a cigar box with no moving parts yet seem to to anything their larger cousins can do.
Will it ever end?
Well, there are power cuts, rogue meteorites and other hazards but I hope we can integrate an exciting use of technology into our activities at Pennine.
